FDA seeks more power

Two egg farms in Iowa have recalled over 500 million eggs because of possible salmonella contamination. (story here) OK so far – food contamination happens from time to time. People get sick, products get pulled from the shelves – no big deal. If you think about the gargantuan size of our food production and distribution network, a few incidents like this are bound to happen.

This incident has prompted the FDA to renew their call for more regulatory power. (story here) Just what we need – another federal agency with more power. The FDA already regulates virtually everything you put in your mouth or on your body.

Food and Drug Administration chief Margaret Hamburg said Monday her agency is limited by law to a mostly reactive stance on food safety and argued that it needs a more “preventive approach.”Giving a series of network interviews in the wake of the egg and salmonella breakout, Hamburg said the FDA is taking the issue “very, very seriously.” At the same time, she said Congress should pass pending legislation that would provide her agency with greater enforcement power, including new authority over imported food.

“We need better abilities and authorities to put in place these preventive controls and hold companies accountable,” Hamburg said as she discussed the approximately 1,300 cases of salmonella poisoning and the recall of roughly a half-billion eggs from two Iowa egg distributors.

Think about your daily activities for a moment. Is there anything that you do that isn’t in some way regulated or controlled by the government? Do you think for one moment that even more government control would make your life better? Do you think that the government can actually prevent food contamination?
